Invite| Child and Youth Well-being Family and Caregiver Series
Well-being is a precondition for student achievement. Students need to be well to succeed. Currently, students face a wide range of mental health challenges, including stress, anxiety, and depression. This trend is alarming and requires our attention.
The Calgary Board of Education invites all parents and guardians to join us in an online series focusing on child and youth well-being. These sessions will be hosted in partnership with experts from Alberta Health Services and will explore topics such as vaping, brain development, mental health, and sexual health.
The next webinars are:
- Mental Health and Anxiety for Grades 7-12 (March 14)
- Healthy Sexual Development (April 11)
The links for each webinar can be found here.
Remind| Fees
We encourage all parents and guardians to review your MyCBE PowerSchool account for outstanding fees. These are located under the Student Fees & Service Registration tab and include field trips, optional course fees, noon hour activity fee and athletics.
Inform| Ramadan
Ramadan Mubarak! The Holy Month of Ramadan begins today and we are happy to support students/staff throughout the month. If students have specific needs during this time of prayer and fasting, students/families are encouraged to let teacher’s know.
Please note, Sansom will have a prayer room set up at lunch should students require it. Additionally, students who are fasting are welcome to spend lunch in our Learning Commons. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide a space/supervision for prayer during instructional hours. Should families wish to sign their student out of school during school hours to pray at an alternate location, they may do so by contacting the school office at 403-777-7700.
Reminder| Student Attendance
It is very important parents/guardians are informing the school when students will not be attending. Please note the following procedures when reporting a student absent:
- Call the school (403-777-7700) and report the absence. Clearly state the student’s name or CBE student number, grade, how long they will be absent and the reason why they will be away (ex. illness, dentist appointment, etc.)
- If a student is leaving school during school hours, a legal guardian must inform the office before they may leave.
- If a student is leaving with anyone other than a listed guardian, the legal guardian must inform the office that the person is approved to pick up the child.
- It is vitally important that we have correct contact information in your MyCBE account. Please ensure updated information (phone number, address, emergency contacts, etc.) is shared with the school.
Inform| School Act Section 58.1
Your child is currently enrolled in the Alberta Education Health and Life Skills Program of Study in grades seven to nine. The program aims to enable students to make well-informed, healthy choices and to develop behaviours that contribute to the wellbeing of self and others.
Human sexuality education is offered in grade seven to nine as a mandatory component of the Program of Study. Pursuant to Section 58.1(2) of the Education Act, you as a parent/guardian may request that your child be excluded from the human sexuality part of the instruction without academic penalty (see attached notice for more information). Please be aware that if you would like your child exempt from this part of Health, the attached student exemption form must be signed and returned to your child’s PE teacher by March 18, 2024.
