Remind| Phones and Digital Devices

It appears that students/families need reminders about phones and other digital devices. On Friday for example, fifteen phones were taken away from grade 9 Physical Education students after several reminders and warning were given to put them away. Students then responded by arguing and causing an issue at Wellness Break and in the office. In another situation this week, a student was found taking pictures in the washroom – a place that we can all agree must be free from technology.

To be clear, Clarence Sansom School has an “Away for the Day Policy” as we have found that allowing the use of personal devices causes major distractions to the core focus of our school—teaching and learning.  As such, we do not allow students to use their personal devices in the school, unless for a specific purpose under the direct supervision of a staff member. If students bring their personal device to school, it should be turned off when students enter the building and be put away, out of sight. If parents or guardians are concerned about contacting their child, they are asked to phone the office. Likewise, students can use school phones to call home if necessary. For more information, please check out our website here.

Thank you for your continued support.

Remind| Traffic Safety

Ensuring our students get to school safely is everyone’s responsibility. Please be mindful of crosswalks, parking rules and speed limits when you are near our schools, especially during the morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal times.

The City wants to remind and encourage anyone who is driving children to school to operate their vehicles safely and responsibly. Parents and guardians are reminded not park where it’s prohibited during drop off and pick up times, such as blocking crosswalks, laneways and private driveways.

Pick up and drop off times can get quite busy. Give yourself extra time to navigate safely around schools, whether you are walking, wheeling, or driving. For those who drive, help alleviate congestion by parking a block or two away and walking in, wherever possible. Parents are asked to honor the No Parking Zone in front of the school, in order to accommodate appropriate access for all of our school buses

Talk to your kids about safe travel practices like using crosswalks with patrols, looking all ways before crossing the street and not jaywalking across the roadways as a shortcut.

Inform| Grade 8 Field Trip

On Wednesday March 20 and Thursday March 21, 2024, grade 8 students are going offsite to learn more about water at Weaselhead Flats Natural Environment Park. At the park, students will collect water samples, explore the park and learn about the land from an Indigenous Elder. As of this email, it looks like winter conditions will be a factor. Please ensure your child is prepared for any weather. Students are reminded to wear proper footwear for walking, and wear winter jackets/snow pants, gloves, hats, winter boots, etc. Also please provide your child with light snacks and a water bottle for the morning, we will return to school by lunch.

Parents are encouraged to review and discuss with their child the behaviour expectations outlined in the CBE Student Code of Conduct, as any violations will result in parents being contacted to pick up their child up early from the Weaselhead Flats site.
