Celebrate| Sansom Prestigious Invitational Tournament
Wow! I was very impressed by our athletes, coaches, leadership students, positive fans, and entire Sansom staff at this weekend’s volleyball tournament. A big thank you to Mr. Burke, Referee Scodeller, entire Physical Education team, School Council, parent contributors and all the teacher volunteers who came out to support. Go Scorpions!
Warning| The Choking Game
There has been some talk lately about students engaging in very a very dangerous game that involves the deprivation of oxygen. In North America, this “game” has been known the choking game, blackout, space monkey, speed dreaming, ghost, rising sun, rush, the scarf game, gasp game, cloud nine, suffocation roulette, pass out and funky chicken. Children and teens are playing the so-called “choking game”, which is an activity in which they strangle themselves or friends for an instant shot of euphoria, believing it’s cheaper, quicker, easier and more legal than buying booze or pot. Unfortunately, this “game” is not new, but has been emerging lately due to challenges on social media.
Please be aware of the warning signs that your child may be playing the choking game, which include bloodshot eyes, complaints of headaches, marks on their neck, unusual demands for privacy, or an unexplained existence of items like bungee cords or leashes.
Inform| Ramadan
Ramadan Mubarak! The Holy Month of Ramadan is expected to begin March 10, 2024 and we are happy to support students throughout the month. If students have any needs during this time of prayer and fasting, students/families should let Connect teacher’s know.
Please note, Sansom will have a prayer room set up at lunch should students require it. Additionally, students who are fasting are welcome to spend lunch in our Learning Commons.
Inform| School Act Section 58.1
Your child is currently enrolled in the Alberta Education Health and Life Skills Program of Study in grades seven to nine. The program aims to enable students to make well-informed, healthy choices and to develop behaviours that contribute to the wellbeing of self and others.
Human sexuality education is offered in grade seven to nine as a mandatory component of the Program of Study. Pursuant to Section 58.1(2) of the Education Act, you as a parent/guardian may request that your child be excluded from the human sexuality part of the instruction without academic penalty (see attached notice for more information). Please be aware that if you would like your child exempt from this part of Health, the attached student exemption form must be signed and returned to your child’s PE teacher by March 18, 2024.
