Inform| Orange Shirt Day

Orange Shirt Day grew out of Phyllis Webstad’s story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools occurring annually. Orange Shirt Day occurs at this time of year when children were historically taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.

Sansom students will be participating in lessons about residential schools including reading and

reflecting on Christina Fox’s experience in a residential school in southern Alberta.  This coming week students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt every day, but especially on Thursday September 28. We can all promote reconciliation in welcoming, caring, respectful, safe, and inclusive school communities by wearing an orange shirt.

Update| Terry Fox Run & House Cup

We have officially finished our first Spirit Week at Sansom! Students competed all week in different activities to help earn points for their House. We also had our annual Terry Fox run this week and had amazing participation from our students during the run. A huge thank you to each student who donated money to our Toonies for Terry fundraiser! We raised over $340 as a school. Our next Spirit Week will be coming in late October – stay tuned for more information!

Request| Student Health Plan

It is important that the office always has up to date student health information on file.  We have already encountered a couple of medical situations this year and it is critical that we know about your student’s medical needs.  Letting us know of a medical condition and the protocols around the condition are important facts for us to know.  Please click on the link to fill out a Student Health Plan and email it to clarencesansom@cbe.ab.ca or send it with your child to give to the front office. Reminder| Athletics & Extra Curricular

We kindly remind all spectators, athletes and parents/legal guardians that they must conduct themselves in respectable ways at athletic events. Specifically, all athletics must be conducted with a high standard of courtesy, fair play and sportsmanship in mind. All those involved share this responsibility. We expect that students and adults demonstrate courtesy and good sportsmanship by positive cheers of encouragement for their team, not against the opposing team. This is evidenced by the absence of booing and vulgarities. Spectators, athletes and coaches must also show proper acceptance of officials’ judgment. If individuals are unable to follow these guidelines, eviction for inappropriate language and/or behavior will occur, and offending individuals must immediately leave any premises or venue hosting the event.

Please note the following for all basketball games played at Clarence Sansom School:

Students:

  • Student spectators are allowed to watch basketball games without parent/guardian supervision. There are a limited number of spots available on a first come first serve basis.
  • Students are expected to be in the main gym watching the game(s) and supporting all players/coaches/referees/parents/guardians in a positive manner.
  • Any student who is not meeting the CBE Student Code of Conduct will be escorted out of the gym and school and may lose future viewing privileges at Clarence Sansom School.

Parents/guardians:

  • All parents/guardians of current athletes are welcome to attend all games at Sansom.
  • Parents/guardians who bring family members under the age of 18 are expected to supervise their child(ren) in the main gym.
  • All parents/guardians are expected to cheer/support all players, coaches, referees, parents/guardians in a positive manner.
  • If parents/guardians are engaging in any inappropriate behaviour directed towards players/coaches/referees/parents/guardians, the game will be paused, and the parent/guardian will be asked to stop.  If the inappropriate behaviour continues, the game will be stopped again and will not re-start until the parent/guardian leaves the gym and school property. If removed, the parent/guardian may lose future viewing privileges at Clarence Sansom School.

Students from other schools (non-players) and alumni:

  • Will not be admitted into the school, for any game(s), unless specific permission is granted by the administration at Clarence Sansom School.

Our main goal is to provide a safe and fun opportunity for students. Please keep in mind the following:

  • The players are kids.
  • The coaches are volunteers.
  • The referees are human.
  • There will be no scholarships or professional contracts handed out at the end of the night.

We appreciate all the positive support. Go Scorpions!

Invite| School Council

The annual AGM will take place in October. Stay tuned for more information coming out in the next couple of weeks.

Request| Volunteers

We welcome volunteers in the classroom, on field trips and with tasks at school or at home. Certain activities or field trips would not be possible without the active participation of our volunteers.

Prospective volunteers must first register as a volunteer at the school office. School administrators will verify your identity and register you in our volunteer database. You will then be provided with a letter enabling you to obtain a police information check from the Calgary Police Service (CPS).

The CPS has an online system, electronic Police Information Check (ePIC), which you will use to obtain your police check after you receive your CBE volunteer letter. If you are unable to complete the process online, you may visit a police information check location instead.

For more information on how to become a volunteer, please refer to the CBE website.
